The Colonel

May 01, 2026

“Et Tu, Colonel.”

We received this latinized piggle note this week from …Roscoe. But more painful, more dishonourable, more execrable, was the unfortunate video which accompanied it.

WELL LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING YOUNG MAN!

THERE ARE BETTER MEN THAN YOU WHO HAVE FOUGHT FOR THIS COUNTRY!

BETTER MEN THAN YOU WHO HAVE FALLEN FOR THIS COUNTRY; WHO LIE FOREVER AT THERMOPYLAE SITES … AT GUALDACANAL … AT THE RESERVOIR … AT THE ROCKPILE!

Honor. This single word says it all.

We are calmer now.

We realize from this correspondence, that Roscoe must at least have turned a page or two of our children's book which we sent him; Bedtime Stories That Will Terrify Children. He must at least have looked at the first story picture of the midnight dog casting a wolf’s shadow, because The Colonel appears in that Story, although a shadow, a haunting figure, whom even Roscoe may expect to see again before these eight stories are done. And with himself, The Colonel shall bring again the chapel chimes of honor; heroism; self sacrifice … to a generation which knows them not.
