“Children don’t need us to make the world feel safe.
They need to know they are not alone when it isn’t.”
~ Dr. Randolph B. Schiffer
- A deliberately varied tonal journey reflecting the unpredictability of childhood fear
- Timeless cadence reminiscent of oral storytelling traditions—measured, almost musical
- A book for both adults and children

These stories are meant to be read aloud—with you present.
They are not jump-scares or shock stories. They are thoughtful explorations of fear, mystery, and meaning—written to help children feel accompanied, not overwhelmed.
Every child is different. Some will lean in. Some will ask questions. Some will ask you to pause. That’s part of the experience.
This book isn’t about pushing children past their limits. It’s about staying with them while emotion passes.
read aloud, slow
Let your voice do the work—tone matters more than volume
Pause if your child wants to talk
It's OK to stop and return another night
The goal isn't to finish—it's to stay connected

DOG: Fear of the unknown in the night—when imagination turns sound into danger, and a child learns that fear softens when faced together.
LION: Fear of what is different—where misunderstanding becomes terror, and a child learns that what seems frightening may simply be unseen or unloved.
MONKEY: Fear of illness and loss—where a child confronts pain, and discovers that comfort shared can outlive even those who give it.
PLANT: Fear of what we create but cannot control—where curiosity turns to consequence, and a child learns that not all growth is good.
SQUIRREL: Fear of being led astray—where temptation disguises itself as comfort, and a child learns to trust wisdom passed down before them.
BEAST: Fear of seduction by power—where beauty masks danger, and a child learns that not everything that calls to them should be followed.
BEAR: Fear of love unreturned—where sacrifice
reveals itself, and a child learns that love is defined not by receiving, but by giving.
STURGEON: Fear of the unknown within—where meaning is not given, and the child must begin to sense and name what lies beneath.

At night, children listen differently.
Shadows grow longer.
Ordinary things take on meaning.
A voice matters.
Presence matters.
These stories were told by candlelight
—not to banish fear, but to sit with it
until it passed.
